The Thing From Another World is much more my style, and, while equally dated, it has that score, one of the absolute best Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591038.post-17452638669934675992007-09-12T00:05:00.000-07:002007-09-12T00:05:00.000-07:00khfiqWell, it was scary back in 1951, and indeed i...khfiqWell, it was scary back in 1951, and indeed it would be unlike Hawks to introduce a lot of sci-fi fantasy or moody horror stylization into this movie. His movies were about ordinary people working together to resolve problems and achieve missions and he was proud of never using anything the slightest bit stylish, like a dutch angle, in his movies.

As regards Them!, I wonder: do you Jeff McMahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17455194268519396055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591038.post-87477431290790632952007-09-11T21:46:00.000-07:002007-09-11T21:46:00.000-07:00Kenneth Tobey is great in The Thing, but other tha...Kenneth Tobey is great in The Thing, but other than him, you have the Babe, The Professor, and the Reporter. I cannot put a personality or a name to any of the other 20 people milling around in that movie. To me, there were just too many people indistinguishable from each other.

And the movie is not scary. There's this really fast paced, clever dialogue, but it seemed like Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591038.post-10542783194220686952007-09-11T14:38:00.000-07:002007-09-11T14:38:00.000-07:00Bernard Herrmann's score is excellent, but there's...Bernard Herrmann's score is excellent, but there's a theremin in Dmitri Tiomkin's score for The Thing as well - a sign of the times.
Can you elaborate as to why the rapid fire dialogue doesn't work for you in a sci-fi/horror setting? It is an intriguing feature, outside of the typical comedy setting, and it makes the men seem more like a cohesive unit, almost like an organism fighting off anJeff McMahonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17455194268519396055noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5591038.post-71553096823352900632007-09-11T10:24:00.000-07:002007-09-11T10:24:00.000-07:00I have not been able to warm to The Thing From Ano...I have not been able to warm to The Thing From Another World like most people. Howard Hawks is one of the greatest directors of all time, but placing his rapid fire dialogue and characters into a science fiction/horror setting didn't really work for me. There's nothing scary about the movie, which is breezy and light.

I much prefer The Day The Earth Stood Still even Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
